Route

I followed the Nieuwe Merwede river north-east, through the Nationaal Park, admiring the scenic wetlands and the birds flying and singing. I continued along the side of the river along the edge of the towns of Werkendam and Sleeuwijk, on roads that seemed to be built on wide, earth-built flood-defence barriers, separating the river from the towns’ residences. I visited the small church of Sleeuwijks Kerkje and was kindly given a brief history of the building and some free postcards by two people who were there.

I walked on to the beautiful town of Woudrichem, with it’s impressive central church and traditional windmill. Despite municipal elections being held, and the church being used as a voting station, I was allowed a quick visit inside.
