Route
The early morning rain again gave way to blue skies as I passed through Durham and back to the Cathedral via Prebends Bridge, catching a beautiful rainbow as I crossed the River Wear.
St. Bede the Venerable is also buried at Durham Cathedral (~672-735 AD). Bædæ, as his name is inscribed here, was a Benedictine monk and polymath, who’s most famous work was the Historia ecclesiastica gentis Anglorum, which included details of the life of St. Cuthbert and Anglo-Saxon Christianity. As well as teaching, translating and producing scientific works, he is considered one of the most important historians of the Early Middle Ages.
After praying in the Cathedral I headed south-east to the picturesque village of Shincliffe.
